VFX Festival 2018 - Title Sequence

Role: VFX team (3D animation / 2D compositing)

I was very fortunate to be able to work on the title sequence for this years VFX Festival.

The Festival assembles industry leaders through a range of talks, workshops, panels and interactive exhibition spaces, all held in arts and cultural hub, Rich Mix. This year’s title sequence was directed by our own Design Creative Director Antar Walker

We developed a narrative around the concept of healthy competition and ‘VFX Sports’. The sequence opens with simple animations that slowly become more ‘weird, chaotic and unhinged’.

“Title sequences can take themselves quite seriously at times”, says Antar. “I wanted to explore an idea that becomes more fun and playful as the film progressesWe used a wide range of design and CG tools to create the sequence, so the end result is diverse in its imagination and execution."

Animations in Cinema 4D, Maya and Houdini were pulled together, creating a cross disciplinary story of sporting moments.  Sport has a lot of visual identity and history across different disciplines, so a restrained palette created a team of red or blue, all competing in different shades of grey. The end result is diverse in its imagination and execution.

Motion capture rigs were used for character work. Cinema 4D animations and sims were then pushed through Maya for look development and rendering. All cloth work also created in Maya. All large scale scenes with large volumes of content were simulated in Houdini. Finally, everything was composited and polished in After Effects.
